MP wants an improvement in the NHS service on Wearside


Philip Hammond MP delivered his first Budget as chancellor in Westminster last week.

However, one Wearside MP was unhappy with some of the decisions made.

Wearside MP speaks passionately about Ovarian cancer awareness

It's ovarian cancer month, which will see charities and campaigners across Wearside and the UK coming together to raise awareness of the disease.

Sharon Hodgson, Washington and Sunderland West MP, is calling on us to spread the word.

It's the sixth most common cancer in the county, but survival rates have remained the same; that's despite other diseases rates increasing.

Often a difficult subject to talk about, Sharon explains why Wearside should be speaking about it:

MP calling on Wearside to back Sunderland's bid to be City of Culture

One of Wearside's MPs is calling on us all to back the bid to be the City of Culture for 2021.

Bridget Phillipson is asking for people in our region to get involved, as Tuesday 28th February sees the official registration of our city.

Ambassadors were in London last month to show the support that it's gained so far.

5th - 11th February 2017

"The Government are literally gambling with the futures of people in our city," says Sunderland MP.


Julie Elliott, MP for Sunderland Central has some tough words for the Government's plans for Brexit.

Judges ruled last month that before Article 50 is triggered, MP's will have to vote.

Our city of course was the first place in the UK to back Brexit.

Julie is wanting to hear from you and wishes to take on everyone's opinions at meetings around her constituency.... 


29th January - 2nd February

Sunderland MP wants to hear your opinions on Brexit


Last week it was announced that MP's will have to vote on leaving the EU.

It's understood that a bill will be revealed to start the UK's exit.

Judges ruled that before Article 50 is triggered MP's will have to vote.

Our city was the first to confirm it's decision to back Brexit.

22nd - 26th January 2017

MP calls upon Government to fix the current state of the NHS

The NHS service is embroiled in a tough winter period on a national scale.

Here on Wearside, there was a 35 per cent decrease in 'full time equivalent' GPs between 2013 and 2015.

Health secretary Jeremy Hunt claims the 27th December was the "busiest day in NHS history."


A Sunderland practice has almost 3 times as many patients per doctor than the national average.

It's said that urgent investment is needed to keep the NHS going.

MP praises Wearside for their generosity 

Bridget Phillipson, MP for Houghton and Sunderland South, has praised people here on Wearside.

With Christmas just days away, the public have been helping to bring a smile to the face of the disadvantaged and poorly youngsters in our city.

The generous public have donated thousands of gifts to the Sun FM Toy Appeal.

4th - 8th December

MP Sharon Hodgson calls on Wearsiders to keep it local

The Washington and Sunderland West MP has encouraged people to shop local in the run up to Christmas.

It was "Small Business Saturday" over the weekend, which aimed at getting shoppers to support local artists, crafts people and traders.

It was all part of a national initiative which ran all weekend, to support, inspire and promote family and online businesses, local shops, wholesalers and small manufacture's.

27th November - 1st December

MP Bridget Phillipson calls for a fairer nationwide transport deal

The Houghton and Sunderland South MP held a Westminster Hall debate in Parliament to press for the Government to ease the North-South divide in funding.

Government figures show central spending on transport in the North East has dropped by almost 20% over the last decade.

While London receives short of 2 thousands pounds per head of population for transport projects, the North East gets just £300.
